Tobstar Daniello // NIGERIA'S EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM // The tragedy
My friend told me something recently that stirred a passion for teens in my heart. He said assuming he knew, he wouldn't have gone for science while in secondary school. The reason is that he just discovered his area of strength after secondary school. He was just 12 then, when he was confronted with such a big decision that will in turn be his academic foundation. Because, if you were an art student, you can't study science related courses anymore in higher institution (legally), and vice versa. But it's a tragedy, when we were young then, some followed their friends to science or art class, some didn't even know where to go - people pushed them to one place (may people push you to success). If you are a brilliant student, they'll tell you to go to science class, if you're dull a little bit or don't know mathematics, they'll tell you to go to art. That's how they do it. Not knowing that stage is really important, it'll determine what you'll study in higher institution, it MAY even determine what you'll become. Some get lost in the process. Most even lost their talent in the process because they never came to the knowledge of it. If not for Facebook, some people won't even know they can write poems, most of them were science students. Sometimes, we need information to wake up our gifts. (May you receive that information you need)
One of my classmates then had to change her section in SS3 so she could study what she love. It's so sad that the school isn't talking about this, our parents don't have time to think about this. What decision do you expect a little boy or girl to make at that stage. Some of them may just be 11, 12 etc when they got out of junior secondary school. Some of them are brilliant, some of them are wise, some of them have discovered their gifts but not all of them. And then after studying what they shouldn't study for 3 years, they'll get out of secondary school and later realise their area of strength and start regretting. It's so sad. And whose fault? The bad structured educational system.

I am a victim.
ReplyDeleteI studied WELDING AND FABRICATION in my secondary school because one of our seniors came to preach to us why choose THAT department and what he hoped to achieved with it; the me who didn't have parents that were mindful of their children educational future, had to follow my cousin to study that instead of business department that would have been more beneficial to me.
So I think our parents has a vital role to play when it comes to this.
It is high time our parents started studying to discover the potentials in their children and put them through in all aspect of their lives.
